Fire Prevention and Household Appliances: How to Keep Your Home Safe

All electrical devices are at risk of catching fire, even appliances! And although this is rare, it is best to find out what measures you can take to avoid an unfortunate accident.

Here are some simple tips from appliance manufacturers and fire departments you can implement to protect your family at home.

The Dishwasher: The Hidden Household Appliance Most Likely to Catch Fire

Many would be surprised to learn that it is possible for your dishwasher to catch fire. This machine has electrical cables and wires that can overheat, the rinse-aid compartment can be the source of a dangerous leak or there may be trouble with the control panel. Add water to the mix and you have an explosive cocktail! A British study found that most dishwasher fires occurred while the machine was in the “delay wash cycle” mode. In the United States, it has been reported that 15 million dishwashers were recalled between 2007 and 2012 due to malfunctions. It is important to inspect your dishwasher’s power cords and connections at least twice a year to prevent any dangerous malfunction from occurring.

When the Fridge Heats Up

This appliance’s mission is to keep some foods cool and others frozen, yet a fridge can still be consumed by flames! One of the main reasons is the accumulation of dust underneath. Dust build-up in its electrical components can prevent them from functioning properly and ignite a fire. It is therefore recommended to sweep the area regularly. Also make sure the exposed electrical wires are in good condition (whatever you do, don’t roll over them when moving the fridge as this could damage them!).

The Dryer and User Error

Like other electrical appliances, a dryer’s wires can also cause a fire, but in this case, flames are most often the result of user error. It is important to clear the lint trap thoroughly after every cycle to prevent clogs. Some dryer manufacturers strongly advise their customers not to add a fabric softener sheet to their laundry as it may block the filter and prevent airflow. Another mistake is drying items that are flammable such as rubber or oil-soaked fabrics (even after washing!). Vacuuming out the exhaust pipe twice a year is recommended.

Forget Extension Cords

Extension cords can be dangerous. They should only be used for low-power electric devices such as a lamp, computer or toaster. The fridge, washing machine, dryer, freezer or oven must be plugged directly into the wall; these are high-energy consumption appliances, so avoid adding unnecessary circuits.

In general, the most valuable piece of advice you can follow is to be at home when an appliance is in operation. You may not be able to prevent it from catching fire, but it will be easier for you to minimize damage if you are present. Also, if you purchase a new device, you may be able to register it with the manufacturer. By doing so, you will receive recall notices in a timely manner. Finally, make sure your smoke detectors are working.
