Each change of the season is a renewed opportunity to thoroughly clean our homes. You’ve taken advantage of fall’s arrival to dust and scrub every room of your house. But are you sure you haven’t left anything out?
Apparently, many of us overlook the following household objects as we work through our list of cleaning tasks. Oopsies!
The Mattresses
Despite the fact that we cover our mattresses with sheets and wash our linens on a weekly basis (ideally), they still require extra care on occasion. First, vacuum the mattress all over. Then, wipe it down completely, without soaking it, using a cloth dampened with hot soapy water. Remember to let it dry before making the bed. This will also eliminate most of the dust mites that may have taken up residence inside.
The Laundry Machine
Sure, the laundry machine is still cleaning your clothes just fine, but it could work even more effectively with a little TLC. Wipe down each and every surface, inside and out, with a damp cloth. Then tackle the hard-to-reach areas, such as its rubber components. Finally, run the machine through its hottest cycle with a cup of vinegar.
The Bathroom Accessories
The soap dish, toothbrush holder, and soap pump also need some attention. A quick wipe down is usually insufficient. Instead, soak the articles in hot water, then use a small brush to scrub away the gunk that has built up inside the crevasses. To properly clean the soap pump, empty it completely and remove any stuck-on soap clumps (in which bacteria can proliferate).
Above and Behind the Fridge
Do you regularly wipe down your refrigerator’s interior shelves, door and handle? What about the top, where grime can accumulate? Don’t forget to pull it out and clean the coils, which can become a real warren of dust bunnies!
The Showerhead
The showerhead is easy to forget because of its overhead position, as well as its intended use—it is after all in constant contact with water. And yet, the truth is that mineral deposits can quickly accumulate inside! Submerge it in a plastic bag filled with a vinegar and water solution tied around the pipe. Leave it to soak a few hours and rinse.
The Waste Bins
Your recycling, trash and compost bins must be cleaned to prevent a build-up of dirt and debris. Plus, because they usually hold food waste, bacteria can easily proliferate. When the weather permits, scrub every surface with soap, a large brush and hose with hot water. Allow to dry before using again.
The Ventilation Grilles
From the air conditioner and air exchanger to the bathroom fans, all ventilation grills tend to trap dirt. Dust particles will rapidly collect in layers, reducing the grille’s efficiency. Soapy water is, here again, your best friend.
The Window Screens
Did you know that the screens you rely on to keep bugs out of your home should be washed once a year? This constitutes a time-consuming chore, usually accomplished at the same time as the windows. You’ll work more efficiently if you remove the screens from the windows and patio doors before you deep clean them. All you need is soapy water.
The Remote Controls
Were you aware that the TV remote control is the dirtiest object found in hotel rooms as it’s so rarely cleaned! Well, the same can be said at home! This includes air conditioner remotes, garage door clickers and video game controllers.
So, will you be adding all these new tasks to your seasonal housecleaning to-do list?
